Abstract
Though grief and loss have been normalized in mental health discourse, a particular class ofbereavement remains as diagnosis- Persistent Complex Bereavement Disorder. Discussion of thismore complex and enduring condition is undertaken in what follows. The dynamics of grief andloss are discussed through this diagnostic category in light of the cultural and psychologicalconcept of the fetish. Fetish serves substitution, evocation, and symbolization in many domainsbut is particularly relevant in the inertia associated with pathological grief. The complexphenomenon of significant loss and the concept of the fetish as substitution for/defense againstcomplexity is provided.
